There were only a few minutes left before the victor of the 73rd Annual Hunger Games would walk out and witness recaps from her games. Only a little while before the interview that followed, and the crowning after that. Time was precious now, and Finnick Odair needed to make sure his victor was ready for what she was about to face out there. Though Kailani had done incredibly well, had fought her way through to the end, he knew that the games hadn't gone as well as the president had intended. He knew there were things said and done in the arena that were not to his liking, and he needed to make sure Kai could get through this now.
The District 4 mentor pushed his way into the room where the stylists were putting the finishing touches on Kai. Physically, she was ready. They had dressed her up, covered up the wounds and the bruises, and made her look almost like the beautiful young girl who had entered the arena. He bet that most of the makeup was also waterproof, just in case. Kai had lost people she loved, their memories still fresh in her mind. He thought back this moment years ago, walking into Annie's room like this after she had won. She had been trembling like a leaf, and all he had really been able to do for her then was just hold her. He held her and spoke soft, comforting words while her stylists tried to finish getting her ready. It was the only thing that had calmed her, but this year's victor was incredibly different. A hug wouldn't be all she needed to get through today.
Finnick crossed the room and leaned casually against the vanity that Kai had been stationed in front of."There's my favorite girl," he greeted with a grin. A stylist was still fretting about her while a few others in the crew chattered behind her. He looked up to them. "Exceptional work, she's a pillar of beauty. Now, I need a word with our champion." They grinned at the praise coming from him, but didn't immediately get the hint. "Go on now," he added. "I promise I won't let her wilt." With small bows, the stylists left the room and closed the door behind them, leaving Finnick and Kai alone.
When the door was closed, Finnick stood straight again, losing all his casual demeanor. There wasn't a lot of time. He held out a hand to her to help her stand up from her chair. "You look the part, Kai, but are you ready? Panem is waiting for you, expecting a triumphant victor who is grateful to the Capitol and the nation for having faith in her and letting her live. Can you give them that?"
