The 73rd Annual Hunger Games had been an adventurous Games, a surprising one. President Coriolanus Snow didn't like surprises. He didn't like cocky victors who thought themselves invincible. He didn't like kids who sent out thoughts of rebellion the Panem without a second thought. He didn't like incompetent film crews who didn't know how to contain the issue. All of that had kept the president rather busy in the hours following the Games' ending doing what needed to be done. For the most part, it was dealt with. There were just a few final loose ends left, one of which was the crowning of this year's victor.
Snow quietly watched the first part of the crowning ceremony in private, as Panem's newest victor was escorted on stage to her throne. The crowd loved her, but then again, he wouldn't expect any different. They loved the show of it all. Kailani's Games were replayed for her, as she and all of Panem relived the ups and downs of the arena. This time, Snow had insisted on seeing the full recap himself before it aired for everyone to see to avoid remaking the errors his film crew had made. Luckily for them, the crew that had been quickly put together to edit the recap had been very careful. There were no salutes, no questionable remarks - nothing but the violence and the action, as it should be. He watched again now as each death was revisited, from the many who died in the bloodbath all the way through to the last death, the kid from District 2.
Throughout her interview, Snow listened carefully and wondered how much of a problem this newest victor would be. Caesar Flickerman managed the interview flawlessly - there, at least, as a man who understood his role and knew how to play his part. If the victor was smart and understood her own role, he would have no reason to do anything further. Hopefully her mentors had counseled her on that very thing.
At its conclusion, Snow stood up slowly and made his way out to the stage. After a hearty introduction from their host, the President stepped out amid a thunderous crowd. All smiles and waving, he took his time as he made his way to Caesar and took the proffered microphone. "What a Games we have had this year!" he exclaimed, which was greeted with even more applause. He smiled, indicating with his free hand after a moment for the excited crowd to settle. "From District 4, our newest victor has triumphed over her adversaries and emerged triumphant. After the battle always comes the peace. This young woman stands before us as a symbol of that peace and the mercy that the Capitol shared with our twelve districts now 73 years ago. Congratulations to our beloved victor of the 73rd Annual Hunger Games, Kailani Sedna!"
As the crowd burst into thunderous applause and cheering again, President Snow handed his microphone back to Ceasar and turned to their victor. He crossed the short distance between them, accepting the smooth wooden box that was handed to him along the way. Opening it, he withdrew the crown and gently placed it atop Kailani's head. "Congratulations, my dear," he said softly to her. His eyes met hers and lingered a moment, his face expressionless. The moment passed, and he turned away. He walked straight off the stage, letting the girl bask in her newly given fame. Yes, he hoped this newest victor would know her place quickly and do as she was told. He would have to trust Finnick to teach her most of all, for he would hate to have to make an additional visit to District 4.
