For awhile, there was dead silence in the Forest, from what Harrison could hear. The boy couldn't stop thinking about Raya, or what he could have done to help her. They were all sitting ducks in the Hunger Games, just staring at each other like a deer and headlights. When the bees fell and started swarming, he didn't see anyone run near him, but they all just ran. His heart was pounding ever since then. Raya was the only body he saw after coming back to see the damage it had done. His eyes had went all wonky, and then he was out cold, hidden in a small bush. Harrison's inhaling and exhaling led him to sleep peacefully, dreaming of the first time he met Raya Stardust, in a clothing shop. She gave him her trench coat to keep him from getting soaked in rain, and it also kept him warm. How was he supposed to thank her? By helping her leave Thomas and get her to win. Then, when Thomas died, Raya said that she killed him? No, she was lying he always told himself ever since he heard the words come out of her mouth. You couldn't have, you're no murderer, Raya Stardust, you have a heart, unlike him, the words he told her on the balcony comforted him as he slept. After a bit of rest in the bush, he woke up to the smell of smoke. It alarmed him immediately to get up. The fire was not in the bush, no, but it was pretty near. As he peaked his head out from the sticks and leaves, he looked to the sides of him, where fire arose. He suspected another trap, but a tribute ran from behind. He breathed in and out heavily as he dragged himself by his good leg away and after the person who might have caused the fire. The smaller boy had tan skin and dark hair, which reminded him of the boy who warned Raya and him about a monster that was chasing them. Matthias the name registered in his head. Harrison couldn't blame the boy for his doings as he probably couldn't fight another tribute on his own. The boy kept running, not directly after the younger, but close enough to encounter him afterwards. The only thing he knew now, was to sprint, and he sprinted the hell out of there. Fire hit his parts of his suit, which slowly lit on fire. Harrison winced at pain as it seemed to spark into his body. The burns may have slowed him down, but they surely didn't stop him from trying his best to get away from the fire. Baboom. Baboom he could hear his heart pound as the fire caught up with him after a bit of a lead on the flames. His head hurt, and maybe he wanted to die now, and be with Raya forever. She was gone now, either taken up by the hovercrafts, or the corpse would be burnt crisp. Tears slowly dripped down his eyes, and he tried to hold them back. The boy seemed to still be running from it, but Harrison went a different way. If he really lit the fire, then he could be very dangerous and a threat to his life afterwards. That was something that couldn't be done. He couldn't die to someone else, he had to die in peace, not trying to bring the other person down with him. The tears got into his mouth, giving it moisture but only enough to let a couple inhales and exhales go without scratchiness again. He kept limping his way, trying to stay away from the fire's wrath that could be his death. "Raya.." he muttered as he ran, trying to use the cluster of trees to continue pulling ahead. "You have to help me," he said louder, practically crying. He was going to die, and maybe the fire meant something. The fire might have meant that the death of Harrison Martial would be the spark of his life, the first time he was actually doing something to protect him.
I don't like not breathing without your breath next to mine.. he thought, still trying to communicate with Raya, like she was right beside him, helping him to proceed onward. She was talking in his head, giving him encouraging thoughts. Just get to the next tree, she first told him, and he got to the next tree. The next? Raya questioned him again in his mind, and he did so. A little bit more, don't worry! The next tree!" he was too upset to question her encouragement to be real or not. The voice in his head was hers, and it was obviously her who was speaking. But how could Harrison speak to the dead? He wasn't some kind of weird spirit of some sort? Did he already die, and was just imagining himself still running? Don't stop, Harrison! she yelled at him, disrupting his thoughts. He moved onward at her desire, trying not to make her mad. Once her voice shuts off in his head, then he'll truly be dead. Mr. Martial was a fighter, and fighting a small fight was just the beginning because there was a lot more fighting to come, on Panem or wherever he goes next.
Hey Harrison? Raya spoke to him.
"Yeah?" he muttered, still trying to get out.
If you get out of there, you'll have water for days, I saw it.
"Really?"
Yeah, and you'll never feel the pain of thirst again.
Those words sparked his commitment, and he ran faster than ever now.

Matthias just ran. His fire had worked better than he might have guessed, and though he couldn't feel it through the suit, he could see how it was spreading. He just needed to get to the beach, and then this would thing would be behind him.
Navigatin' around (Current navigation success: 0/2): 3KR|DcGa5skill
A rabbit ran out in front of Matthias as he ran, nearly tripping him. It stopped the boy completely, as that little creature's fear told Matthias the full severity of what he had done. It wasn't just tributes that this fire of might hurt, but animals as well. This forest was filled with animals; he had seen them, and heard them. He had marveled at them, some like home and some so different. Many of those poor creatures would die or be wounded trying to escaped the fire he had set, and they had never done anything wrong. The tributes hadn't done anything wrong either, but at least their survival meant his death. The animals had nothing to do with it, but the boy who had always loved animals with all of his heart was punishing them too.
The formerly-deaf boy from 10 was done running. He had no idea where he was going anyway, whether he was running toward the beach or the cornucopia or just in circles. What had he done? It might have been Basil that first put the idea of the fire in his head, but he was the one who had carried it out. He was responsible now for the death of many animals, if not people as well. This was what his sponsors wanted - or at least, what people expected to happen in the Hunger Games. Almost everyone who ever made it out of the Hunger Games had to kill someone to do it. The fire was Matthias' weapon.
Matthias fell to his knees, then completely sat down in the burning forest. Back home, the fire burning in the hearth had always been beautiful to him, warm and welcoming. But here, the first and only fire created by his own hands was evil. He no longer wanted to look at it or run from it. He rested his helmeted head on his knees, hugging them close to himself, and let the fire continue on around him. He couldn't feel a lick of it through the armor, so why did it matter where he was? He was glad that the cameras had no way of seeing his face right now, because if they could, they would see that he was crying.

When Matthias finally raised his head again, the fire had moved past him. He didn't know how much time had passed, how long he had been curled up. All that was left of the fire's ferocious malice was a few patches of tiny fires and the burned shell of a forest. Nothing around the boy seemed alive, or if it was, it was still painfully on its way to death. He shuddered as the pain of what he had done seeped farther into his bones. It was a part of him, a part that made him want to die in these Games. The alternative was living with the fact that he had done this.
After a long while, Matthias slowly stood again. His legs were stiff and uncomfortable as he asked them to move, and as he started walking, he changed his direction completely. He didn't know where to go from here. Maybe Basil was alive, and he could join her. He had guessed she had gone to the beach, but who knew. He didn't even have any clue which direction the beach was. He ached to join Basil, his truest friend in this arena by far. He only hoped his fire hadn't been her undoing, a fire that was her idea to start with. He wouldn't have ever thought of it on his own.
So Matthias Jensen picked a direction, and he just walked through the remains of the fire he started.

Matthias wandered, alone and silent. He pulled off his helmet, cradling it under his arm as he walked. Even with his hearing on, there wasn't much to hear around him. Occasionally, there was the snap of a branch or the small crackle of a still-surviving flame somewhere. He was tempted to turn his hearing off so that he would avoid hearing even this, but he needed to hear. The forest was this was because of him, so he needed to understand that to the fullest extent.
The boy kept his gave level was he walked, looking only at the path in front of him. If he looked down, he might see the remains of some animal or... person. He shuddered again. At some point as he walked, the anthem played. He looked up, seeing that the only person that had died was Harrison. Harrison Martial, from District 8.
He might not have killed Basil, but his fire had killed someone who had once been nice to him, and told him about life in District 8. He had liked Harrison, and now the boy was dead. Because of him.

Matthias did the mental math in his head as he walked: four left. Himself and Basil were two of them, and he couldn't remember who the other two were. Honestly, he hadn't been keeping track, except for how many were left. When he'd been with Basil, that had been all that was important. It didn't matter who was left, because they were going to protect each other and get through to the end. Once they'd run across Harrison, the girl from his district, and the boy from 11, everything had just been chaos. He knew the boy from 11 was dead too, had seen his name in the sky earlier.
He wished he knew now, who was left. He wanted to know who he might have to try and kill, or be killed by. Maybe he could actually do it, kill someone in person. Hurt them, anyway. The boy looked down at the knife in his hand. It was sharp, shiny, and looked brand new. Amidst a crumbling world and dark thoughts, it was eerily and disturbingly beautiful.
Matthias shook his head. Don't think like that, he told himself.

The eerie silence of the ashen forest exploded in sound. A scream pieced the air, cutting through it like the knife he held. The boy from District 10 jerked to a stop, frozen stiff by that sound. Basil. It had to be her. There might be another girl still alive in the arena; he didn't know. But the tugging he felt at his heart told him it had to be her, and he wasn't there to protect her. He needed to be there. He hated himself for the time he had spent dallying, lost in his own guilt and pain.
Matthias' didn't remain frozen for long. In the next instant, he was running toward the sound. Running, as fast as he could. He had to get to her, to save her from whatever it was that was hurting her. He might have been the useless boy once, back at home. But he could create a fire that could kill, and he could do a lot of things. Whatever was hurting her, he had to find a way to make it pay.
He ran.

Matthias didn't even know where he was going, only toward the sound. But he wasn't sure where that was, because his ears still weren't very reliable. They hadn't been all Games, but he wouldn't trade them. They had been a gift from the Capitol, something he hadn't ever expected to get. They might not be useful in many ways, deceiving in others, but they had heard so many things, both good and bad. He'd heard screaming and pain, but also soft rain and Basil's melodic voice. His ears were the things propelling him forward right now, giving him new hope and new meaning.
A memory flashed into his mind as he ran. He'd been sitting at the playground at school, by himself like usual. It was a couple of years ago. With a stick, he was drawing the school building, trying to get the odd angle he saw it from just right. As he glanced up for another look, he spotted his brother Aramis, not far off. He was only two years older, but together with a couple of his like-minded friends, Matthias' brother seemed so much older and larger. Aramis and the two other boys were surrounding a smaller boy, but one Matthias recognized from their grade. The boys' backs were mostly to Matthias, so he couldn't see what they were saying, but from the way the small boy cowered, it couldn't be anything good.
Matthias had jumped to his feet, anger flooding quickly through him. His brother had always been a bully, and Matthias guessed that the fact Aramis couldn't beat up on Matthias as much as he might have liked just made him worse. Matthias clenched his fists, watching as the words that made the smaller boy cringe turned into pushing. Pushing turned into shoving, and the smaller boy was practically thrown to the ground. He struggled to get up, to crawl away and Aramis kicked him in the stomach. Matthias flinched as if he had felt the kick himself. The smaller boy turned and looked straight at Matthias, the pain on his face so poignant as he begged with his eyes for help.
Matthias had wanted so desperately to run then, to save the boy from the beating for whatever reason Aramis and his cronies had decided to beat him. Instead though, he had just stood there, angry. Angry, but only watching. It wasn't the first time something like that had happened, or the last, but he would never forget the boy's face. Most likely, Matthias would have just joined in being beaten rather than helping, but he should have done it anyway. He should have tried to help.
Now, nothing was going to deter him from going to help Basil. He couldn't let it. Unlike the boy from years ago, it might really mean her death if he didn't.
