Silence speaks Loud and clear All the words we don't want to hear Ava looked over at Aiden. His messed up hair on the pillow, his bare back turned towards the girl. He slept peacefully for what kind of business he was in. Well, she was certain he was asleep. After what the two had been through in the night, there was no reason he shouldn't be sleeping soundly. She stroked his back lightly for a few minutes, hoping that if he wasn't sleeping before, he would be now. She turned around and got out of the bed as quietly as she could. It wasn't that she wanted to stay, but she knew she shouldn't. She was playing a game she couldn't win. Aiden amazed her in every way--his intelligence, his charm, the way he took her in the night--but she couldn't get too close. The two were allies, and if she kept this up, she could get badly burned. She hadn't let herself get close to anyone after her father died, and she wasn't about to now.
She sat on the bed as she picked up her blue dress off of the floor. His home was nice, a quiet and clean place. It was a place she wished she could spend her time with, especially with him. But in the business she was in--the business they were both in--a relationship wasn't a good thing. Her father made the mistake of getting married and having children, and she vowed she wouldn't do the same. A one night stand was one thing, but a relationship was another thing that could lead to disastrous consequences. She wondered if Aiden would understand. Leaving in the middle of the night wasn't very nobel of the woman and it left with bitter feelings, but it would be better than going any further. She didn't deny that there were feelings there, but those feelings were better left alone.
Ava put on her dress. She wasn't excited to be walking in the dark in the middle of the night, and she didn't have her knife on her. It was stupid of her not to bring it. For all she knew, Aiden could have harmed her. But she had a gut feeling he wouldn't. It went against what she believed in, having the upper hand and all, but she didn't want to bring a knife and worry him. She needed to look out for herself and only for herself. She picked up her black heels, not going to put them on until she left the home so she wouldn't wake him. Ava then stood up and looked back at him. She didn't want to leave. She really didn't. It was more complicated than it should be. This was the best night she had in a long time. The chemistry between them was perfect. But nonetheless, she began walking towards the door, secretly hoping that maybe Aiden would stop her. WORD COUNT: 490 TAG: Aiden Solis NOTES: Hope this is okay!

"You can still walk," Aiden said into the moonlit darkness, a smirk on his face. "Here I thought I'd fixed that problem." They were words without depth, and he said them more like Aiden the merchant than Aiden the man. They were words to put into focus how casual the night had been, how Calla's leaving meant little, but if that had really been true, he could have feigned sleep until she left. He could have let her think she alone had made the decision to avoid that morning-after question. But the truth was that at least a part of Aiden didn't want her to go, and so he couldn't remain silent. And alright, a part of him couldn't let her have the power to make the decision alone. He'd fallen asleep after their night together, pleasantly satisfied, but the gentle touches along his back had woken him up. Her hands had been comforting, but he could read people well enough to know knew what they meant. He knew those touches were a sign that she was thinking of leaving, and he wouldn't let himself be lulled back into sleep by them. Of course, he had been thinking the same thing. It was the smartest way for their night to end, because their relationship behind closed doors should either be professional or casual, and waking up next to each other had the possibility of complicating that. There was something about Calla. She had an attractive power, which perhaps should have frightened him a bit more than it did. She was smart, charming, could keep up with him in a conversation, and was incredibly beautiful. She'd been an itch in the back of his mind since he'd met her. She wasn't the first girl to win that honor, no, but she would be the hardest to handle by a long shot. There was a great deal he didn't know about her - she had veiled her life from the public. All he knew was the little she'd told him and the rumors he'd heard about the master of secrets. He wasn't exactly an open book either, and he couldn't be, especially not with her. He had a whole network of people to protect, as did she. They couldn't be in a relationship, but there was nothing wrong with the casual fling, even if it repeated itself - often, he hoped. There was no reason they couldn't both establish that and she could stay. Aiden pulled back the covers and took a moment to fish around on the floor for a pair of pants. He pulled them on and, after a second's deliberation, pulled on a shirt as well. "The district's not always a very nice place this late when a pretty girl like you is out there," he said, crossing the distance between them. He pulled her to him quickly, his hands settling on her hips. He grinned and raised his eyebrows, adding in mock sincerity, "I'm afraid you might hurt someone, Calla." Ava's certainty wasn't always on point. A good example of that was now, when she heard Aiden's voice in the darkness. Shit, she thought to herself. She knew it would be a lot more difficult to leave, but it would also be a lot easier to bring up the situation as a whole. She turned and laughed at his joke. "Unfortunately so. I have been known to withstand a lot, you know," she said smirking, throwing the same talk at him. She thought she avoided the awkward situation very well. She put her heels back on the floor, knowing that she would probably be staying longer now that the two were awake. She wondered if Aiden was offended by her leaving, but by his words, she figured not. The darkness filled the space between the both of them now. All night, there hadn't been space between them. Now, though, it felt as if they were as far away as the room would allow them.
She was somewhat glad Aiden had stopped her. After all, the night they spent together was intimate. Leaving after such a passionate night wasn't initially on Ava's mind. She leaned against the wall, wondering if he would still take offense if she was to leave right now. That might make things even more complicated though. If Aiden had stopped her, he would be the first man to have her stay the night. Ava usually swept away in the middle of the night and never saw the man again. It was a lifestyle she wasn't proud of, but it got the job done for her. No ties, no hurt feelings--at least on her part. Things were more complicated with Aiden, though. They worked together, and she assumed they would be seeing each other a lot more. Whether it was in professional clothing or none at all, she couldn't assume for the future.
The brown-haired girl saw him look around for clothes, and she let out a small chuckle. Watching a man find his clothes in the darkness was amusing for her. He was quite the charmer, she thought. If only he had stayed quiet and let her leave. She found herself trying to convince herself to leave, only to be bound by wanting to stay by Aiden's funny yet ravishing personality. When he was done fiddling with his clothes, he walked over to her and put his hands on her hips. Well, so much for leaving at that moment. She had never met a man so...smooth, was that the word? She thought it was. Ava was usually this serious girl who played a game of power and tug-of-war. But when she was around Aiden, she felt something different. She couldn't put her finger on what it was, but it was something that she didn't mind.
"Anyone who messes with a girl in heels should be terrified. I would be," she said smiling and putting her arms on his hips. She also figured, possibly regretfully, that she should tell him her real name. If they were to be working together, and if they were going to put up with this...well, whatever it was, she knew he had to tell him. She got closer to him, smirking as she looked up at him. "Who's Calla, again? You might need to have your hearing checked. It's Ava. Already getting me confused with another charming woman, I see." She thought it was delightfully casual. The way they should be, in her mind. Casual and lighthearted. It would be a lot easier that way. No attachments and no explanations. Aiden liked the sound of Calla's laugh, and her ability to keep up their banter now. Even though she had gotten up to leave, she wasn't pushing him away. Of course it would be easy for her to leave if she was cold, or if he was, and it would put a clear line on what their relationship was. But who needed clear lines anyway? "I'll just have to try harder next time," he promised. As he looked for his clothes, he heard her chuckle and gave a small smile to himself. With some girls, he didn't bother with clothes at all unless he had to, but it was colder outside of the sheets than he would have guessed it would be. Maybe it was because it was the first time in hours that there had distance between the two of them. Besides, she had already dressed and had made it halfway to the door. "So would I," he agreed, pulling her a bit closer. Her next words really got his mind going, though. She'd given him a false name. Actually, he found he really so surprised, only it stung a little now after the night they'd had. Hiding your name was a smart thing to do if your job was in secrets. He'd been tempted to give her a false name when they met too, but that wasn't his style. Aiden had lived his life by essentially hiding in plain sight. Everyone knew his name, and even the Peacekeepers knew he was some kind of businessman. If you seemed to live your life in the open, people didn't get suspicious, but Calla - Ava - obviously had a very different tactic. Only - why tell him her real name now? She could have kept it to herself and he wouldn't have known any different. Did only the men who slept with her earn that little piece of information? It was possible she was giving another false name, but that would be ridiculous. One should be more than plenty. Plus, the way she'd given her real name had been so smooth and even mock jealous, as if her name was somehow no more than a little misunderstanding he had made. She was good. "No, you're right," he agreed, starting to walk the pair of them forward, his hands on her waist to help guide her. "You couldn't be Calla. Calla was this sweet little devil who threatened to have me erased within five minutes of our meeting and our talk was all business. But Ava..."" They'd reached his intended destination and he lifted her smoothly onto a desk. "Well, Ava still could have me erased, but after tonight, I almost wouldn't mind." He pushed her long brown hair to one side and kissed her bare neck, taking a moment to breathe her in. He wouldn't force her to stay the night, wouldn't even ask her, and it really might be best for both of them if she left - but closeness to her was intoxicating. Still, after only a brief moment, he pulled back and took a step away from her. He was still within reach of her, but his hands left her waist and his body no longer touched hers. "Ah, but Ava was leaving, wasn't she?" WC: 544 Tag: Ava Paragon

Ava, even in a private place like Aiden's home, still felt like she was playing a game. That was her whole life, after all. She talked her way through men and women alike, watching her footsteps so she couldn't get into anything too deep. Even now, when she revealed her name, she still could have the upper hand if she wanted to. She could cut him loose and she wouldn't feel anything. But something still drew her closer to Aiden. Maybe it was the thought that this was something she shouldn't be doing, especially with someone she was working with. Or maybe it was the fact that Aiden had so much power and she was drawn to him in that way. She also felt like that she shouldn't make up an excuse as to why she was still here. But if she was to stay the night, she would give him something that no other man she bedded with got to experience.
The girl smiled at Aiden, trying to read him. Was he actually enjoying this night with her or was he playing the same game she was playing? She couldn't tell. He was hard to read, especially with both of them in the dark. She put her hand up to his cheek when he kissed her neck. He was warm against her cold hand. She had been out of the bed longer than he has, and she appreciated his warmth. She loved the way he spoke. She took in his words. Even when they spoke, there was so much intimacy behind their words. When he was done, she pulled him towards her and kissed him.
When he asked if she was leaving and backed away, she almost rushed back to him. Tonight, he was her addiction. She was in a state of controversy. Should she leave and get away from him? That was probably best. But she also wanted to stay, embracing his warmth and lust. She hadn't had the touch of a man like him in a long time. She pushed her hair out of her face and smiled. "I guess I'll leave that decision up to you. Leaving would be best, would it not? But staying would be such a different story. What shall it be?" She liked giving men the power to choose when it came to small decisions such as this. Ava figured what he would say. She took a step back, letting herself linger in front of him. When Aiden pulled his lips back from Ava's neck, he was only pulled further into her. He returned her kiss, any space that had been between them gone once more. He was enjoying their back and forth. Even here, beyond the watchful eyes of anyone else, they exchanged power between them. He'd met women with some power before, but none who knew how to use it like she did. She didn't have to reach for it, it was just there. It was a part of who she was, both out in the world and in here with him. She could use that power to hurt him, if he let her, and perhaps that was half the draw. At her answer to his question, Aiden shook his head. "The one being left can't make the decision for the potential leaver," he said, then gave a half grin. "Of course, being that I live here, it would be stranger for me to be the one leaving." His words were a stalling tactic more than anything else. There was no doubt in Aiden's mind that he could convince Ava to stay if he wanted to. His job and his life dealt greatly in manipulating people into doing things they might not otherwise do, wanting things they didn't know they wanted, making deals they normally would shy away from. Most of the time, he could do it without the other person having any idea that they were being swayed. He was a natural charmer, and he wouldn't have gotten where he was otherwise. He could have done that tonight, but of course he'd been the one to bring up the subject of her leaving directly. And besides, he wanted her to want to stay. "Leaving is smart," he started, keeping the current distance between them despite wanting to close it. "Staying only isn't if we let it. We both know the game and the stakes. So, do you want to play it safe or take a risk? Me, I'm usually not much for safe. The risks tend to be a lot more fun." He'd answered her question and still turned it back on her. He already knew which option she normally took - the false name and trying to leave while he was asleep answered that for him. Still, either answer from her wouldn't surprise him - one would just set far more boundaries between them than the other. WC: 403 Tag: Ava Paragon

More than anything, Ava wanted to close the gap between her and the man in front of her. She wanted to be close with him, to feel his breath and touch his warm skin. The distance was more than just darkness in between the two. It was a lingering decision that would affect the both of them. It was the breath in between the words they spoke. It was the playful tension in which they were both participating in. Her with her indecisiveness and him with his humor. She wondered if that was how he always was with the women he took back to his place. Playful yet cautious. Ava wondered if he ever had a girlfriend or someone he was actually serious about. For some reason, she couldn't see him as the committed type. Of course, she had never been committed to anyone. She didn't even give anyone the chance to tell her good morning after a night of sleeping together. Men were usually the last thing on her mind unless one had done her wrong. Now, Aiden was the first and only thing on her mind.
She had crossed her arms, smiling at his joke of him leaving his own home. His humor included him taking things literal. He had done that more than once in their time together. Ava could have been annoyed at his tactics, but instead, she embraced them. As funny--or unfunny--as he was, he was still trying to be lighthearted in a difficult situation. Well, for her, it was a difficult situation. She normally had her mind made up within a few seconds on things, but this was one of the encounters that stumped her. Congratulations Aiden, she thought to herself. You keep surprising me the strangest of ways.
"You and I have a lot in common, then," she said as he spoke about risks. Ava then walked over to the bed and sat on it. "I guess I could stay for a bottle of wine in these early hours of the morning. If you have any, that is. And if not, there's no use staying, is there?" She smirked and looked at him. She was trying to dance around the tension as much as she could, but she had ultimately made her decision. Even if it was just for a glass of wine, she would be staying for a little longer. She knew she wasn't just staying for the bottle of wine and she hated herself for it. Ava hated herself more that, as much as she didn't want to admit it, Aiden won by convincing her to stay. Or was it herself who was convinced to stay? Possibly both, she figured. WORD COUNT: 452 TAG: Aiden Solis

Aiden smirked as Ava's next response included her walking back toward the bed. So it was to be no boundaries, no rules. It was risky, potentially stupid a terrible idea, but he couldn't say he didn't want it. It didn't mean anything to wake up next to someone, though it was enjoyable. Still, he couldn't remember having this conversation with another girl. None of them had left in the middle of the night - though he had on occasion. In the morning, it varied depending on what was planned for his day and how much he liked the girl. Aiden didn't have any hard and fast rules when it came to female relations, other than the one reminding him not to get too attached. Maybe one day, when he retired from this job of his or got to old, he could consider settling down with someone, but at present it was far from a good idea. "I was kinda hoping that my good looks and charming personality were reason enough," he said in mock disappointment. Then he sighed. "But alright, the girl asks for wine and I'm a gentleman. Wait here and hold onto all those good thoughts you're having." He turned away and walked off toward the kitchen. Once there, he scanned along the rack of bottles displayed intricately on one of his walls. They hadn't made it into the kitchen when they'd returned back to his place. Actually, she'd probably actually seen more of his place in the few minutes she'd been awake now than she had when they first entered. Back then, hours ago, it had been all Aiden could do just to get inside with her. It had been all they could do to make it to the bed. It was too bad really, because he wouldn't mind showing her around sometime. Despite the extravagant things he often dealt in, his home was simple and well-kept, spacious and a touch elegant. His clients might be materialistic, but he was a minimalist. Aiden selected one of the darker reds and popped off the top. He considered grabbing glasses, but dismissed the thought a moment after it had occurred. He started to carry the bottle back toward the girl waiting on his bed, pausing only for a moment when he passed his reflection in the glass of one of the kitchen cabinets. He ran a quick hand through his sleep-mussed hair, wiped off a smear of lipstick from the left side of his throat, and continued out. When he saw her, he raised the bottle. "A bottle of wine, as ordered," he said, crossing to her. "I hope you weren't expecting glasses though. Those weren't in the deal." He took a drink from the bottle, the taste of the win sharp with a touch of sweetness at the very end, then offered the bottle out to her. WC: 478 Tag: Ava Paragon

Ava enjoyed the company of others, for the most part. It was especially true with the men she slept with. They all had different back stories, different lives, and different tastes in women. She didn't really care about their past, they were usually boring and dull. Their lives, on the other hand, were interesting to her. Strangely, a lot of the men she slept with were married and needed a fresh new face. That was the fun part to her, and she could use it against them if they ever tried to threaten her or her life. She considered sex a hobby, dabbling it in every now and then when she had the time. It was fun for her, as she never had to see the man afterwards. She didn't have to deal with feelings or attachments. But it was fun seducing men and trying to get them to do things they wouldn't normally do.
Aiden, on the other hand, seduced her for the most part. He baffled her when they first spoke, being charming and handsome. She was glad to have him tonight to fulfill her hobby. And he was very good at it too, so he made it more fun than it normally is. He didn't live in a pigsty and didn't have any children to cry in the middle of the night. In fact, she loved the home he lived in. It looked beautiful yet simple when the lights turned on. A man like him should live a lavish lifestyle, Ava thought. The work he was in was trading goods, and she was surprised that his home was lacking the richness of his business. She had her home in a similar way, though it was smaller and even more simple than what he had.
Ava watched him come back into the room and drink straight from the bottle. She laughed. "I see you're keeping it classy. A man in the trading business doesn't have a wineglass fetish? I guess not," she said with a wink and took the bottle from his hand. She drank from it. The sweet taste of grapes tingled her tongue. She hadn't had wine this good since her last alcohol shipment to her home, which was about a year ago. She smiled after she swollowed it. "Ah, but he might have a wine fetish." She took another sip of the wine and handed it back to him.
"Here's a question for you. You're a very desired man who has a lot of power in the black market industry. With this inevitable war coming up, who are you going to side with?" Ava was genuinely curious. She was going to go with the people who paid her the most money and would work against their opposition that they wouldn't be able to win. Though what she was doing was illegal, she knew people weren't dumb and needed people like her and Aiden. TAG: Aiden Solis NOTES: Sorry phone post!

"Oh I have plenty of wine glasses," Aiden argued with a laugh. "But wine glasses are for classy dinners or nights under the stars. They're for normal hours, and we left wine glass time about..." He craned his head over to glance at one of the nearby clocks. "Five hours ago." He smiled and watched her take a drink. He was actually partial to normally using a glass, but wine glasses did seem to have a certain formality in them. They made it seem like everything was nice and orderly, sophisticated even. Nothing was like that in the middle of the night, though. In the middle of the night, things were messy and rough. Anything could happen, and as evidenced by his middle of the night adventures - including this one - they did. When she spoke again and handed him back the bottle, he laughed and shrugged. "I just might," he agreed. The conversation took an unexpected turn after that, though perhaps the fact that it was unexpected was to be expected. Now that they were both awake, both committed to staying here for the time being, practically anything was fair game. Aiden took a moment to consider her question, tipping another mouthful of wine into his mouth. First, he didn't doubt the "inevitable" part of her question. Of course war was brewing. He had seen it in the eyes of frantic buyers, in hushed conversations in The Fuse, in the hateful glances toward Peacekeepers. The very tension of it meant that business thrived for Aiden and his ilk, but one day, that tension was going to boil over. When it did, everyone would need to choose their side. It would be a lie to say that Aiden hadn't considered which side he would fall on, but for the most part, he figured it wouldn't matter until that time came. He worked and played behind the law, but he had plenty of law-abiding citizens as customers as well. Well, law-abiding except when it came to what they needed from him, anyway. He'd sold to Peacekeepers and wanted criminals alike. He hadn't taken part in any sort of rebellious planning, but he hadn't sold out any of the things he had heard either. For Aiden, the people in charge of the nation didn't seem to matter much. If he stayed out of their way, they stood out of his. It was a mutual, unspoken agreement. As long as that stayed in place, he saw no reason to get involved. "I plan to avoid sides altogether," he told her honestly. "I do what people pay me to do, and if I'd ever had strong predilections either way, I don't think I'd still be in business." He took another drink of wine before handing her back the bottle, then leaned back against the wall behind the head of his bed. "I guess if someone had a gun to my head and made me choose, I'd choose whichever side the guy with the gun was on. That would be my main plan for not dying, since choosing the other side ends with my brains all over the floor. Not a good outcome." He turned his attention back to Ava. "What about you? Which side of the wall would you fall on?" WC: 546 Tag: Ava Paragon

All sexual intimacy was gone now with Ava and Aiden. It was back to their flirty comments, even though they both looked messily put together. It was the middle of the night, after all, and it had been the first time she was able to see Aiden's face tonight. His hair was a mess, but that was to be expected. Even in the light and with his informal attire, he still looked handsome. A lot better than most of the guys she bedded with. They either looked good when she was drunk or decent enough for her to use for the night. There was something about the look in his eyes that really caught her eye. It was also one of the reasons why she was still staying. She couldn't put her finger on what it was, but it intrigued her. It made her want more of him and his history.
Ava loved to speak about controversial topics, especially with people who weren't afraid to speak their mind. Her and Aiden had a lot more in common than she wanted to admit. Their work mirror the other's, and the way they spoke so charmingly to each other really felt like she met her match. Someone who was just as smart and ambitious as her, it was surprising that they hadn't met each other before. She was astonished that she could hold a conversation with him. She guessed that dealing in illegal trades bonded the two together.
But when she spoke about his side of the war, she really listened. She took the bottle back from him. She watched him speak, and when he asked her the same question, she chuckled. He didn't want to end up dead, but she didn't care about that part. "It's funny because I haven't chosen a side either." She said, taking another drink from the bottle. "I'm planning on taking the side that will pay me the most. They say money is power, and I hate to say it, but most of the rebels are pretty broke. I really don't care who wins or loses as long as I get my pay."
Ava had more than enough money to spend. She had so much money she could be alive for 200 years and not run out. But she didn't have money because she cared about spending it. She had money because it held power over people. She kept taking money and giving secrets. It was almost like people's dignity was being sold to her. Whether it was a jealous ex-boyfriend or a commander of the military, looking on the internet for secrets was somewhat of a desperate move. So many people had taken to it though. Whenever someone bought a secret, she would get their name and ask her associate in the correct district to gather information about them. It was a win-win for her, and a lose-lose for the customer. But she never lost them, because buying secrets was addicting. They didn't know when to stop.
She took another sip of the wine. She gave it to Aiden and sat next to him against the wall. She smirked. "Do you know the story of Commander Giden in the war before the Dark Days?" The wine was strong, and stronger than a lot of the wines she had had in a long time. Ava loved it, and she loved having company who was just as intelligent as she was. Aiden's stance on this upcoming war wasn't exactly a shining example of good character. In the world, it seemed like most people chose a side for one of two reasons. First, they chose it because it matched their beliefs. Whatever they were choosing or doing in some way coincided with the person they believed themselves to be. Second, they chose a side because of the profit or gain that could come from choosing it. Somehow, the side they chose would bear good things for them. While Aiden fit more into this second camp than the first when it came to the war, he didn't really belong to either. Peace in general wasn't profitable or good for him, so aligning with either side based on belief or profit didn't fit. This wasn't something that was good to admit to people, though. Most people would think less of him, or think he was a coward. It certainly wasn't something he'd admit to a potential client, or most people for that matter. Admitting this piece of him came naturally enough though in this conversation with Ava. He figured if anyone could understand where he was coming from, it would be her. Their work aligned in a myriad of different places, and he didn't really have a full grasp on whatever her moral compass said. And if she had judged him for it, called him any of those things that other might have called him for such an admission, then he decided he would accept that. It would create a barrier between them getting any closer emotionally, which was for the best when it came right down to it. Ava didn't judge him for it, or even comment on it. Instead, she presented her own opinion just as plainly. He couldn't judge her for her opinion, and simply nodded. "Well, aren't we the shining examples of a moral compass," he said with a laugh. "But we'd probably both be laying dead in a ditch somewhere or stinking drunk every day if we were, so I call that a win. Whatever pays the bills or keeps us alive is good in my book, and this war will just make things a little more interesting." Ava passed him the bottle back again, and Aiden's eyes followed her as she moved to sit next to him. He liked watching her move. She moved with grace and confidence, and of course it helped that she was sexy as hell. It kept him on the verge of abandoning conversation attempts altogether and taking her again, but the fact that her charm and intelligence kept him back well enough meant something. It was rare to be both physically and intellectually attracted to someone for Aiden, who'd normally dealt with either one or the other. They more they talked, the more their outlooks on the world seemed to align as well, in most of the important ways. Aiden brought the bottle to his lips and took another drink, letting the smooth win glide down his throat. Its effects were already beginning to lighten him, a feeling he greatly enjoyed. "I'm afraid that's one I don't know," he admitted. "Tell me a story, Ava." WC: 532 Tag: Ava Paragon

Ava figured that there was a silent rule with herself and Aiden: what is spoken and done in the home stayed there. She wasn't about to go tell people she slept with one of her associates or what his stance was on the rebellion. She wondered if that was a rule for all the girls he bedded with. Whenever she slept with anyone, she didn't tell them anything about herself. They were lucky to even get a word out of her after they hit the flirting stage. Aiden was the first one to know her real name, though she had her reasons for telling him. It was mostly because they would be working together and he would find out eventually. Still, she didn't mind sharing her name with him. She was a pretty open person when anyone got to know her surprisingly, but she never revealed specific details about her work. Even if she got close with someone eventually, she would never show them the process of her secret trading business. Both for her sake and for her clients' sake.
She laughed with him when he spoke about their moral compasses. Wasn't that a fact. Both of them worked in the business of moral grey lines, where she dealt in people's secrets, and in his case, fetishes. Ava knew District 5 was pretty corrupt, but with two big dealers in District 5 hand-in-hand? It was actually funny. "You're completely right. I think the war will make things a lot more interesting. Maybe that way I can be stinking drunk every day," she commented, smiling. She was joking, as alcohol was only good in social situations, like now. It was also only good to have it every once in a while and drink the best brands there were on the market.
The story she had in mind was only a myth. She was actually told this by her father, a man who she respected more than anyone. He was the genius behind the secret industry, and she just took over from him. Maybe it was a lesson he warned her about, or maybe he just wanted to tell a story to the young girl. Either way, it was the most interesting one she knew.
She smirked and looked at the open space. She leaned her head against the wall. "Commander Giden was part of the army, of course, being a commander and all. But he was the most ruthless and the most cunning. He would do anything to get his way. He wasn't always like that of course, but when he killed his own family for a promotion, there was no turning back, was there? He was trying to find a cure for dying, you see. He wanted to be immortal, and as you probably would have guessed, was obsessed with it. He tried so many things; he drank blood, turned to cannibalism, and I bet you get the rest. When he was older, he hired an apprentice. His apprentice was an extremely smart gentleman, and Giden figured he could make up a cure for immortality. But one night, in his sleep, his apprentice killed him. There was no reason behind it. It's a shame, really. Giden could almost save others from death, but not himself." She ran her hands through her hair. By this point, Aiden probably thought she was crazy. "What do you think it would be like to be immortal? To watch everyone around you die and not age at all?" She thought about it, but she knew it wouldn't be too bad. It might get boring, sure, but it was fascinating. She knew there would never be a cure for death, that was dumb to even question that, but she wondered what his thoughts were on the subject. "Wouldn't that be the life," Aiden returned with a laugh, although he couldn't imagine actually going through life like that. He enjoyed a good drink socially, but he got a different kind of buzz off of working. Those two things didn't coincide well - unless the specific business transaction called for a little drink. In those cases, he drank far less than he appeared too, and appeared far more inebriated than he was. Aiden had chosen this particular business because he liked it, and because it suited him so well. If he'd wanted a profession in which he could be stinking drunk every day, he could have chosen to be a common merchant, or an errand boy, or a drunk asking for handouts. Or maybe something in the food and drink area - the best bars tended to have the drunkest proprietors. As Ava started into the story of Commander Giden, Aiden relaxed back against the wall and listened. He was following along with what she was saying, but he was also watching her. She was looking ahead as he spoke, allowing him a perfect profile. He let himself enjoy this view and the sound of her voice. It really was no wonder she did what she did. Who wouldn't be pulled in by that face and share their secrets? Who wouldn't want to hear a new scandal from those lips, told in that smooth, gentle voice? She surely had little problem generating business, and she probably also had no lack of bedmates. It wasn't something they had discussed, nor something he planned to, but he was neither first nor last to see her like this. Tomorrow night, she could be in someone else's bed, sharing wine and swapping morally grey stories. He didn't much care for that thought, but for tonight at least, she was in his bed. The story Ava told him was interesting, one worth logging away. The commander was hungry for eternal life, blinded by his greed to the threat of his own apprentice. She was right that it was a bit of a shame, though Snow knows what Panem would have done with an evil-sounding eternal commander. Well, Snow would either have him killed or locked up, most likely. To be killed in his sleep too - that was the coward's way. Aiden himself wasn't the kind that wanted to die heroically in some sort of battle, but a great man dying while he slept was just embarrassing. "I'd ask where you heard a story like that, but I don't want to give you a reason to kill me," Aiden returned with a smile as he considered both the story and her question. He sipped the wine and handed it to her, then put both hands behind his head as he thought it out through speaking. "I wouldn't probably go around eating people in order to live forever, but if I just could be, it wouldn't be so bad. I'd have to move around a lot, because when people know you're immortal, they probably view that as a sort of challenge. So I'd get to lead different lives, see the country, watch history being made, remembered, and forgotten." He paused, shifting a little as he considered something else. "It would suck though if one of those lives I chose was falling in love and doing the family bit. Not that I'd probably intentionally chose that one, but when you live forever, you probably get lonely and things happen. Then they'd all grow old and die while I stayed young and pretty. It would kind of put a damper on the whole immortality thing after that."Aiden was quiet for a moment, mulling that last bit over. He was never really that close to his parents, and didn't have any siblings. He'd been in lust plenty of times, but not in love, and that was intentional. If he lived forever, he was bound to eventually find someone he loved, even if it took a couple hundred years - those were just odds. So it would eventually all get ruined, and he didn't much enjoy the prospect of getting to a point where he wanted to kill himself in any lifetime. "I think I'd rather just stick with good ol' mortality," he concluded, looking over at her. "I'd have to make new connections in those new places, change my name and all that. It'd get tiring, and I like what I've got for myself here. But what about you? A mistress of secrets probably wouldn't ever tire of life." WC: 758 Tag: Ava Paragon

Ava laughed at what Aiden said, saying that she would have to kill him if she told him where she learned it from. It wasn't some sort of a secret by any means. Maybe her father made it up to scare her or maybe it was real. She would like to think it was real. The story fascinated her in strange ways. Not in the way of him being cannibalistic, that was atrocious, but in the way of his motives. He was more ambitious and committed to one thing for his life. She had never told that story to anyone else, but she really enjoyed it herself. It was something that she loved to hear when her father was alive. He was the one person she looked up to before he became a paranoid wreck. "My father told me that story when I was a little girl. I wasn't sure if he intended to scar me for life or amuse me, but it did a little of both." She laughed. It was a story that nobody would forget, especially Ava.
The brown-haired girl listened to Aiden's take on the immortality thing. She loved listening to him speak. He said things with a lot of certainty that most of the guys she slept with didn't have. Those were the guys she was really invested in. He was confident, charismatic ,and ambitious, and she absolutely adored all of those traits. Though when she listened to him, she was surprised at the falling in love and the family segment. She didn't figure Aiden as the family type at all. Her eyebrow raised slightly when he said that, not really meaning to do so but doing it anyways. Maybe under all that playboy business man he was a romantic at heart. She would have grinned at the thought if she wasn't listening to his story. She couldn't picture him as romantic, not because she didn't think he was, but because he seemed too playful. Something about her wanted to get to know Aiden a little better, whether it was her wanting to be friends with him or more than that. He was an enigma to her, and the more he spoke, the more she was hooked.
"You know, You make some really good points," she said, taking the bottle of wine and taking a sip of it. She looked at him and nodded. "I'd have to agree with you. I don't think I'd want to be immortal. It'd just get so boring. And besides, isn't that why we do the things we do? It makes us feel on edge, like an adrenaline rush. Anything could happen at any point, and if I lived forever, I would lose that thrill and get bored. " She knew she might be stabbed in the back or snipped one night, but she didn't care. If Ava died like that, she would be okay with that. She lived with the fact that any day she could die, and she had that rush made her love living. She wondered if Aiden felt the same way. They knew a lot about people and anyone could expose them if they wanted to. Their jobs both lived on the thrill of others paying them for illegal things.
She took another drink of the alcohol. God, she missed having great alcohol. She also missed having great men in her bed. Aiden was probably just as much of a playboy as Ava, maybe even more so. She knew that she would have to find someone just as good--or better--than Aiden was to satisfy her needs after tonight, though she hoped that they would continue with their fling every once in a while, or more than that if he desired. Ava knew that she wouldn't get close to anyone. She had been trained to keep her feelings separate from everyone she ran into, and she figured she could easily do the same with Aiden. In fact, she needed to do that with Aiden. If she was going to get close to anyone, it would probably be him, but she knew that it was wrong. In Ava's life, they didn't stay for long, and that was how she intended their intimate relationship to be.

"Quite a father to tell a story like that to a kid," Aiden replied, chuckling a bit with her. It seemed to be more of a cautionary tale than anything else, though the moral of it wasn't entirely clear. Was the point not to get blinded by pride or greed or power? Was it not to trust anyone? Was it to know your own limitations? Or was it simply a tale to remind a person that everyone was mortal, no matter what you tried to do to change that? Perhaps it did a little of all of those things. He could appreciate a tale with a good lesson at the end of it. After all, when you were a business like the one he was in, sometimes you had to make your own cautionary tales. Aiden listened as Ava gave her own opinion about everlasting life, and he had to agree with every word. The more they spoke, the more they seemed to have in common. They weren't similar just in their lifestyle choices, but in their ideologies and beliefs. His life - and, he assumed, hers - was full of risks and was anything but boring. Add immortality to the mix and it just didn't work. There really was something to be said about that risk of death lurking around the corner. If Aiden didn't stay one step ahead of his clients and dealers, if he overlooked one piece of information or trusted the wrong person, it could all be over for him. Instead of scaring him, that threat of looming death incentivized him. "I couldn't agree more," Aiden said, voicing his thoughts. "Nothing is much of a risk if you know for sure you'll be alive tomorrow." He smirked, glancing at Ava. It was because they had that risk that he knew he couldn't get close to Ava beyond this banter and the occasional sex. They'd put each other at risk, as strong feelings for a person of any kind put both parties as risk. It was one risk he knew was best to avoid. If he knew for sure he'd be alive tomorrow and the day after, there'd be no barriers between them. But if he knew that, they might never have met, and the whole thing wasn't worth considering. As it stood, he was enjoying her company. He wouldn't mind spending the whole night chatting about what else they believed and what else made them who they were now. He was curious to find out where else they matched and more about how that brain of hers worked. He'd love to find out how her job worked, what she used to get secrets and how she'd gotten to where she was now. She fascinated him in a dozen different ways. That wasn't the kind of night you spend with a business partner and bedmmate, though. That was the kind of night you spent with a lover. Aiden took the wine bottle from Ava and took a final sip, relishing the taste of it. Then, he set it on a bedside table and turned his attention back to her. "Speaking of mortality," he began with a smile, "we should continue to take advantage of our own. You've had some of my wine and we've talked about our potentially short futures." He pulled her into his lap facing him, letting his hands move down along her sides and settle on her hips. He let his eyes follow their progress for a moment, then looked back up into her face. "Now, how would you spend the rest of this night, knowing it could be your last?" WC: 605 Tag: Ava Paragon

Ava liked using her time wisely. In her profession, good time management was something that was extremely important. She always did things that she enjoyed. She loved her job, loved the people she kept company with, and loved going out and collecting the juiciest secrets in Panem. Most people seemed to hate their job, but what she did was dangerous and exciting. Aiden did the same thing, and maybe that was why he carried himself so proudly. Maybe he loved his job just as much as she loved hers. It was very rare that she met someone who stood proudly and was happy in the position they were in. Everyone always had something to complain about. Ava, on the other hand, never did. She liked things that went her way, but when they didn't, she just thought of it as another part of an adventure.
The brunette saw the empty bottle, smirking. She was glad that there was something to drink for the two of them to share. She was also glad that it wasn't poisoned. Even if it was, she could die right here and be alright with it. It was a comfortable bed, after all. Good wine, good men, and a good bed. If she ever retired, that was what she wished for. It wasn't a complicated wish. But she wondered if she would ever retire. Even when she was old and wrinkly, she didn't know if she could ever give up the thrill of secret trading. She was committing some of the highest forms of treason, and she loved every minute of it. Maybe one day she would get caught, but she doubted it. With the team that she had, there was no way that anyone could know that it was sweet, innocent Ava.
The relationship the two had benefited them in so many ways. They were both so powerful, and she couldn't help but keep thinking about the power that the two would have if they were close. Not close in a relationship standpoint, but close in a business standpoint. If they told each other their business secrets and combined their forces, they might be a force to be reckoned with. But right now, she couldn't have found a better person to spend the night with. When he slid her into his lap, she smirked and looked at him. She put her arms around his neck. "If this was my last night, I'd love to be part of the chaos. But I'm too buzzed to be thinking about what kind of chaos would happen, so I think I might just spend my last night with a guy and some expensive wine. And right now, I have both of those." She reached next to her to turn off the lamp, immersing the two in darkness once again. She kissed him, not wanting to leave the apartment for the rest of the night.
