The thing that stood out most to Miles about being with a traveling musical was the gossip. Sure, everyone worked well together and were professional enough but outside of rehearsals, rumours were flying. He had been disappointed to realize that most of the rumours circulating were about Oliver and who he had or hadn’t slept with. Rumour had it that he’d been with basically everyone, but there was no way for Miles to know which rumours were true and which were just bored chorus kids gossiping. The name that kept coming up though was Kira. Apparently she and Oliver had some sort of history together, possibly were still involved. People couldn’t seem to pin it down, but everyone was interested in finding out. Miles liked Oliver a lot, probably more than he should. Sure, they had been flirty and Miles thought maybe there was something there, but nothing had actually happened between them. Not yet, anyway. He had no claim to Oliver and no good reason to feel any kind of possessiveness over him. Yet anytime he heard about Oliver getting to cozy with one of the other performers, something twisted inside him. He wouldn’t admit to being jealous, but it was somewhere in that neighborhood. So despite every voice inside him screaming that this was a bad idea, here he was in the rehearsal space waiting for Kira. They hadn’t spoken much in their time on the train, but he was desperate for more information on her feelings towards Oliver. Mostly, he was desperate to know that it wasn’t true. He couldn’t just come out and ask though, so he’d asked Kira for some help figuring out the dance moves. Hopefully during this time alone he could suss out what rumours were true and what was just gossip. He heard the woman come in and got up out of his stretch, giving her a wave. “Hey Kira! Thanks for agreeing to help me out,” he said, greeting her with the sincerest smile he could muster. “I just can’t seem to get the steps during the bridge.” It pained him a little bit to tell her that he was struggling when he thought he had been dancing just as well if not better than many of the other cast members, but he needed an excuse to talk to her. “You’ve been doing this much longer than me, so I figured you could give me some tips.”

Kira was a lot better than almost all of the chorus members, and it was obvious. Her experience definitely showed through her dancing, as she had formal training when she was a kid and danced as a career most of her life. If she didn't have a history with Oliver and she wasn't pushing thirty, it was quite possible that she might have gotten some sort of a supporting role. But she did have a history and she hated to keep reminding herself that she was pushing thirty. People told her that she looked good for her age, but in her mind, that was almost more offensive than saying that she just looked good. She was a dancer, after all, so she didn't know why they would say that she was only good lucking because she wasn't older.
But chorus members did ask for her help, which made her feel good. Especially the younger ones. This time, it wasn't a chorus members who asked for her help though. It was the supporting male, Miles. He was a fantastic dancer for growing up in an outlying district. He said he was having some trouble dancing to the faster tunes and in a big group like he did sometimes with the chorus, so she definitely agreed to help him. It made her feel like she actually wasn't useless.
She smiled when she saw Miles and waved back at him. He seemed like a nice boy, though she also had been hearing rumors about him and Oliver. In all honesty, she really didn't care anymore, though he just seemed so...young. Almost too young if it was Kira's opinion, but she wasn't here for gossiping. She was here to help someone be a better dancer. "Hey Miles, nice to meet you. It's really no big deal at all. I'm glad to help," She said. Kira was actually in a good mood today. Since she started focusing more on dancing and not the drama, she felt a lot better about herself. She didn't drink as much, she ate full and healthy meals, and she was doing something she loved. When she got her mind off of the Oliver and Alec bullsh*t, she actually seemed to be having a pretty good time with the cast.
"Alright, so with this dance, it's fast and a step twister. You just kind of have to say the moves in your head and not focus on the music as much. Which is easier said than done, I know, but once you know the music and songs by heart, it's a lot easier to focus on the dancing. Just say the dance words in your head, right when it's the empty four counts of eight. Turn, turn, out and jump, step, pivot, step, walk, walk, walk, right. At least, that's for the first two counts of eight. But let's just focus on that right now." She stretched her hands above her head. She saw Miles and herself in the mirror. Miles watched Kira’s reflection in the floor-length mirror as she explained each step to him. He remembered when the choreographer had given them all the routine, rattling off steps to the whole group of dancers as they moved together and tried to stay in sync. The moves had been difficult for him to get then. He was so focused on doing just as well as everyone else and not falling behind. Perhaps he was too focused on what everyone else was doing, losing his footing once or twice. He wasn’t the type to accept failure, though. He had been back in the rehearsal space after everyone else left, running through the moves for hours in front of the mirror, watching to make sure not a step was out of place. The extra practice had left him more sore and tired than he’d ever been, but it was worth it. At this point, he thought he could probably do the dance backwards and in his sleep. Of course, he couldn’t let on to Kira that he didn’t actually need that much help. He didn’t want her to know what he was up to. Besides, she seemed nice. He had fully expected to dislike her from how everyone else talked, but he didn’t see what was wrong. She wasn’t full of herself like he thought she might be. She had agreed to help him after all. She seemed perfectly nice and understanding to Miles, but maybe there was a side of her that hadn’t come out yet. There must be a reason for all the gossip surrounding her. The music started to play and Miles began to run through the routine side by side with Kira. He hadn’t honestly wanted help when he asked her, but seeing her dance, he might be able to learn a thing or two from her. She moved with an effortlessness that didn’t come as naturally to himself. The pair ran through the first few counts of eight, Miles keeping an eye on the woman beside him to see how he could tweak his movements to improve, to look more like her. After going through the routine a couple of times, Miles paused the music. “I think I’m getting the hang of it,” he told Kira. “But the choreographer must hate us, giving us such a tough routine.” He laughed lightly and leaned back on his heels. This break might be a good chance to probe his new acquaintance for information. “His name’s Alec, right? I hear good things, but I haven’t talked to him much. What do you think?”

Keeping to herself made Kira sane in this musical. Almost every one-on-one interaction ended in war, and though some of it was her fault, she knew that a lot of it wasn't. It stressed her out, though she channeled all of her stress and anger into dancing. She had a different side of her when people pissed her off, though she hated when that side of her came out. Despite what people were saying, Kira was actually a nice person. At least, she thought she was. She was competitive and sassy, but she thought of herself as respectful to people who respected her back. The redhead knew mean things were said about her, though she wasn't sure who spread them. Alec probably did, no doubt. If he could say awful things to her face, he could say awful things about her to other people.
After a couple rounds of practicing the step, she already saw improvement in Miles. She was wondering if he really needed help or if he had a hidden agenda. Since everyone here seemed to have some sort of alternative reason for dancing or talking to people, including her, she was pretty suspicious of everyone. Nonetheless, maybe Miles really wanted to get better. Maybe he recognized her as a good dancer and confided in her to make him better. This was what she lived for, right? to dance herself and help other people on the cast.
When Miles paused the music, she smiled. She walked over to the wall to get her water bottle, listening to Miles. He brought up Alec, and she gave him sly smirk and an eyebrow raised. He wasn't fooling her at all. Maybe he was friends with Alec, but she never saw Miles talk to him. Maybe he was just bringing up casual conversation, though he might be a part of the gossip mill like every other person in the cast.
After she sipped her water, she chuckled. "Why, did he put you up to something?" She smirked. Most people probably thought Kira hated Alec because she was with Oliver. At this point, it was anything but that. She didn't like him for the snake he was. She didn't care who knew her feelings towards him. She was blunt when it came to people asking her questions. "Let's just say that you probably shouldn't talk to him. Definitely not the nicest guy outside of rehearsals. But he's an alright dancer. He's good at following directions from the director." Kira thought she was better. Why shouldn't she be when she had professional training and starred in musicals in the Capitol? WORD COUNT: 440 TAG: Miles Kelley NOTES: Kira is always petty
