Miles tapped his foot impatiently, shifting slightly in his seat. He didn’t want to look nervous in front of the others who had auditioned. After all, they were his competition, and he knew in situations like these, confidence was key. He couldn’t help but think some of his nerves were coming out anyways. He knew he’d done the best he possibly could at his audition. He was definitely the best dancer here. It wasn’t egotistical to say that, it was just a fact. The small number of people that has shown up to audition coupled with his previous experience meant that it wasn’t difficult to beat out the others in that area. But Miles knew his singing probably needed work. He didn’t have a terrible voice, but it certainly wasn’t where his real skills lie. Despite his lack of singing experience, his dancing had been enough to get him past the first cut. He thought had done well so far, but he wouldn’t celebrate until he was on the train out of here. Of course he was relieved to still be in the running, but that wasn’t much to brag about. Only ten people, himself included, had come to audition for the show. District seven had been particularly rebellious during the dark days, and most of the people here didn’t take kindly to a musical about their pain and defeat. For his part, Miles honestly didn’t care what the show was about. If some people got offended by the topic, that was their own problem. He just wanted to get away, and this might be his only chance. Some of the less impressive auditions had been sent home already, leaving only three people left. Miles had no idea whether they would ask for a second round of auditions, or if just wanted to draw out the suspense a little. Either way, he was raring and ready to find out his fate. After what felt like a millennia, the door creaked open. The director had finally returned to deliver the verdict. Miles jumped out of his seat and put on his most winning smile, striding up to him with false confidence and shaking his hand. “Good to see you again, Mr. Bennett. I just want to thank you for the opportunity, no matter what you decide.” He might be laying it on a little thick, but Miles thought it couldn’t hurt to schmooze the man who might be giving him a job.

We can get to the casting and if any other dark days characters wanna introduce themselves they can jump in, since I assume they're around because this is one of the last audition stops

Oliver held auditions in The Capitol and six other districts. He was tired from not being able to stay in one place for more than a day or two. He was tired of trains breaking down. He was tried of cast members fighting. He was tired of a lot of things, but he had to keep going. He thought everything that came before the audition was hard, but this. This. Was. So. Damn. Hard. Perhaps he'd never really known real work until now. But it was better than anything else he could be doing. Now, today, he was living out his dream. District 7 didn't have that much talent. He didn't find one in every district, which was slightly disappointing. But the ones he found were better than he could have hoped for in country beaten down by civil war. One person stuck out though, a young man. He danced better than everyone else. He danced with skill and passion. But then when it came to the singing, he wasn't as good. Oliver supposed one couldn't have it all. The young man jumped up to greet him when he came back into the room, instantly grabbing his hand. Oliver laughed, "Well, you certainly have the charm." He turned to the two other people and dismissed them, thanking them for showing up and wishing them luck in their future endeavors. Then he turned to Miles. "Last man standing. Congratulations Mr. Kelley," Oliver said. "I think you already know that you're the best dancer in District 7. Truth be told, one of the best I've seen. Where did you learn to dance like that?"WC: 273 Tag: Miles Kelley

Miles couldn’t keep the smile from his face when Oliver sent the other auditioning dancers away. He had been fairly certain he would get the part, but there was a small voice in the back of his head saying that maybe he hadn’t been good enough. Maybe he would be stuck here forever. Instead, Oliver was offering him exactly what he wanted: a one way ticket out. “Thank you so much. I promise you won’t be disappointed,” he said, beaming. Of course, Miles knew it wouldn’t be all glitz and glamour. Being on the road was probably hard work, but he was ready for the challenge. “I taught myself to dance,” he told Oliver proudly. “I’m the best in the district because I’m willing to do whatever it takes to be the best.” He remembered back when he had first started dancing. He had been living on the street, nothing to eat and unsure of his own survival. There had been other street performers around the district, and Miles started hanging around them, using the music to distract himself from the hunger. At one point, he found himself dancing along, repeating some simple steps he had seen before. It wasn’t much of a performance, but a passerby dropped a few coins at his feet. It was then that he realized performing could keep him off the streets, and it might just be his ticket out of his old life. Looking back on where he’d been, Miles was proud of how far he’d come. But he couldn’t exactly tell that story to anyone. “It’s just hard work, you know?” he said, brushing it off. What would a bunch of capitolites think of him if they knew he had been homeless? He couldn’t have them looking down on him, so it was better they not find out about his past. They could just keep on thinking he was some child prodigy. No reason for them to know he had only started dancing because it was the only way for him to survive.

Oliver looked at the young man and saw in him, himself. But this young man was different than him in at least one way. Miles Kelley wasn't afraid to put himself out there, whereas it took Oliver years to finally get to this point. He'd let people tell him he wasn't good enough, he'd let them throw away his dreams and follow others. He was now over thirty and this young man had just turned twenty one from what Oliver read on his file. Miles had the world at his finger tips, and Oliver would part of that. They were both going to be part of history. "I knew I was right about," he said with a smile. "It's been a long day. I saw a bar down the street on the way over here, I'll buy you a drink?" Oliver asked. He had no intentions by it, it would just be nice to not drink alone today. Most of the cast members would be packing up all the gear, they would leave for the next District tonight. Oliver found it easy to sleep in the train with the constant sound and movement, but he found it much easier when he was inebriated. That way, he wouldn't have to pay too much attention to whatever bickering would be going on as soon as he entered the train. WC: 227 TAG: Miles Kelley

First Miles got the part he had been working so hard for, and now his handsome director was offering to buy him a drink? Things were definitely looking up for him. “That sounds perfect,” he agreed, all too happy to get a chance to get to know the man he’d be working with better. “After all, we have to celebrate, right?” He grinned and turned on his heel, leading the way out of the audition hall. His confidence faltered as the pair stepped into the dimly lit bar, unsure how to proceed. He didn’t have much experience in places like these, as he was only recently old enough to get in. What did normal people order to drink at a bar? “I’ll have whatever you’re having,” he told Oliver, hoping his cluelessness didn’t show on his face. This was his first real professional job, and he didn’t want to come across like a child, especially not in front of the director. Miles turned to Oliver as the bartender made their drinks. “This is one of the last stops, isn’t it? Did the other auditions go as well as ours?” He let out a self-deprecating laugh. He hoped for the show’s sake that there were more people at the other auditions at least. Even Miles could admit that District 7 was a little lackluster when it came to talent. Still, he was curious about who else was in the cast. It wouldn’t hurt to find out more about the people he’d be working with before leaving for the train. He hoped he would get along with them, but a train full of performers was a recipe for drama. At least he liked Oliver well enough.

He'd had many celebrations since the musical began, some of them he couldn't even remember. And some more memorable than others. He nodded, thinking that this one might be one of the more memorable ones. Somehow, he always knew when people were meant to be a part of his life. As soon as he spoke to them, it was like trying to figure out a puzzle and once he figured out the puzzle, things clicked. And he knew, this person would be important to him. He wasn't exactly sure about Miles, yet. But he had a feeling. When they walked to the bar, Miles said he would have the same thing. Miles was young, but not too young that he wouldn't have drank before, surely. But perhaps he was only playing it safe. Oliver was his boss after all. They sat down at the bar and Oliver ordered them something mild, nothing to strong, and slightly on the sweet side. If this was Mile's first time drinking, Oliver owed it to him to make sure he liked what he was drinking. "Tell me, is this your first time at a bar?" Oliver asked with a smile, "I won't judge, I promise." "We have four more districts to go," he said and smiled at the second question. Kira was in District 2, and Linna from District 6. "They were... interesting," he tried to think of the proper word and that was the only one that came to mind to explain all the drama that had already transpired since. "You'll get a chance to talk more to the cast. I'm sure you'll get along with them just fine." He added just in case the young man was nervous about being out on his own traveling across Panem. It wasn't exactly normal and not many people had the opportunity to do it. "Are you nervous at all about leaving your home?" Oliver asked once the drinks came. He smiled at the sugar that the bartender added to the rim of the glass, as well as the lime. He always did liked bars that had some style and at least tried to make their drinks look good. “Well, if you promise not to judge,” Miles said, laughing. He had been a little nervous about coming across as naive, but Oliver made him feel more at ease. When Oliver said he wouldn’t judge, Miles believed him. “I just haven’t had much occasion for drinking. Until now, that is.” Miles wasn’t totally inexperienced. He didn’t have a lot of extra money to spend at bars, but he could charm people into buying him a drink if he wanted. He just didn’t have the time or patience for it most of the time. He could get used to it if Oliver was the one he was drinking with, though. Miles was pleasantly surprised to find that the drinks Oliver ordered were actually good. He hid his smile behind the glass as he took another drink when Oliver answered his question. The pause said more than the words themselves. There was definitely some drama going on behind the scenes. “Interesting, huh?” he asked. “Well, if they’re as nice as you, I’m sure we’ll get along.” What was he doing? Flirting was his first instinct, but he shouldn’t be flirting with the director. Miles could feel his face turning pink and he willed his blush to go away. “Anyway, I can’t wait to meet them.”Miles faltered a bit when Oliver asked him if he was nervous to leave. Most of the others probably had been. They’d likely feel homesick, miss their families, miss their friends. Miles didn’t have any of that to worry about, just himself. “Am I nervous to perform? Of course. Nervous to leave the district? Not a chance,” he said, trying to brush off the question. “Mostly I’m excited. There’s a lot I haven’t seen of Panem.” Miles had a lot of negative memories of his home district, but he didn’t want to think about that now. Focusing on the positive future ahead of him was the best thing he could do.
